19th-century photographer Frances Benjamin Johnston forged a new identity in self-portraiture, turning on its head artistic conventions popular in portraiture of the genteel Victorian woman.

Celebrate Women and Support Gender Equality and Inclusion

Beyond the Paint is thrilled to support the collaborative contemporary art gallery Kahn Gallery, artist Laurence de Valmy and Art Girl Rising in celebration of Women’s History Month. They are paying tribute to six women of the Abstract Expressionist movement with a series of unique artworks by de Valmy and their companion t-shirt.

Available now, (I purchased my t-shirt-awaiting delivery) on the Art Girl Rising and Kahn Gallery websites and Instagram accounts, the black unisex t-shirt has been produced in a limited edition. It proudly features the names of Lee Krasner, Elaine de Kooning, Grace Hartigan, Joan Mitchell, Helen Frankenthaler & Alma Thomas who inspired de Valmy’s latest artworks. A percentage of the proceeds benefits organizations like the National Museum for Women in the Arts and Women for Women.
