I am honored to write the statement for an upcoming exhibition: “Sisterhood Portraiture with Amy Chaiklin and Sally Brown.” The exhibition statement creates an entry into the show’s sixty mixed-media works; 30 by Chaiklin and 30 by Brown. Each pair of works honor a “special group of women artists.” They have contributed to the development of Chaiklin’s and Brown’s artistic practices and provided a deep well of inspiration. “Sisterhood Portraiture” opens on September 8, 2023 at the Monogalia Art Center in West Virginia. Two works from the upcoming show highlighted in this post: “Guerilla Girl,” Amy Chaiklin “Tribute to Lorna Simpson,” Sally Brown |
Artist Spotlight: Amy Chaiklin
Amy Chaiklin was a guest on my podcast, Beyond the Paint with Bernadine. Since our collaboration on the show, we have become wonderful friends.
Her female imagery, ranging from witches, goddesses, superwomen and the women who have supported and inspired Chaiklin, reveals a wide range of women’s experiences.

Below is a link to the episode; an insightful dive into Chaiklin’s work, practice. The episode includes the “true” story behind her 1983 mural “Beauties on the Bowery,” a work she produced atop a “painted over” Keith Haring mural.
