American Female Artists at the New Britain Museum of American Art (NBMAA)

Three part series to engage you into the contributions of American female artists. Each stand alone presentation highlights women artists in the collection. “Capturing Nature: Abstraction and the Female Voice” (February 11, 2022, 1-2 p.m.)  In this talk, we will explore nature (trees, flowers, water, land, even the moon) through Abstraction; Female artists include Agnes Martin, Alma Woodsey Thomas, Helen Frankenthaler plus artists like Etel Adnan from the NBMAA collection. What we see in the natural world, these celebrated women artists distill into the essence of its shapes, forms, and colors. 

“Reclining Female Nude Figure” (February 18, 2022, 1-2 p.m.) Explore the history of female nude figures through artistic traditions (mostly white males) and the female response. Artists highlighted will include Suzanne Valadon, Alice Neel, Mickalene Thomas plus women artists in the NBMAA collection. I recorded a podcast episode (#142) based on this talk.

“Printmaking and the Black Female Experience” (February 25, 2022, 1-2 p.m.) A celebration of black female printmakers in the NBMAA collection. Visual representations by women artists Elizabeth Catlett, Faith Ringgold, and Kara Walker portray black women in their strength, beauty, dignity and illuminate the the black female experience.
